These are the birds we often see and absolutely love experiencing here in the Lofoten Islands!
Depending on the timing of your booked trip, you'll likely see many of these birds and possibly even more!
In the coastal regions look out for Eurasian oystercatchers, redshanks and curlews, black guillemots, razorbills, great black backed gulls, black-legged kittiwakes and the striking parasitic jaeger, and the long-tailed duck, known for its elegant flight. You may spot black-tailed godwits and common eiders near the shore, while Atlantic puffins nest in large, lively colonies off Lofoten’s outermost islands.
Shorelines offer plenty of exciting bird life like the arctic tern and common tern, common ringed plover, red breasted mergansers and white-tailed sea eagles, while lakes and rivers attract majestic whooper swans, red-throated and common loons. And with a keen eye and some luck, we may meet a curious river otter family fishing along the shore.
Among the cliffs keep an eye out for ravens, golden eagles and peregrine falcons and the northern wheatear who migrate from Sub Saharan Africa.
In the forests, we may see great spotted woodpeckers, chaffinches, bull finches, willow tits, and great tits. With a bit of luck, we might even catch sight of the short-eared owl, hawk owl, or the vibrant green woodpecker.
If we are on the sea, there’s the exciting possibility of spotting orcas, minke whales, porpoises, and perhaps even a sperm whale amongst the tides of seabirds that call these waters home.
Inland forests and open areas offer chances to spot red foxes, snowshoe hares, and, if we’re very lucky, ermine and moose. Whether along fjords, in the mountains and coastal cliffs, or in the magical birch forests, Lofoten is a paradise for birdwatching, with diverse wildlife living in one of the most beutiful places on Earth!
What is the best season to go birding in Lofoten>
Fall
This is an exciting time, because great flocks of birds are on the move as winter sets in. If you’re interested in experiencing Lofoten after the tourists have left, the days grow crisp and the leaves turn gold, this is a magical time to look for wayward feathered travelers.
Summer
This is an exciting time to be in the Lofoten Islands. This is the season of the midnight sun when millions of birds are nesting across Lofoten and the outer islands. From May - August, Lofoten is absolutely bursting at the seams with birds and bird song.
Winter
By December, winter has set in across Lofoten. The days are short and the light is fleeting. Northern lights, bright starry nights and the chance to experience Lofoten in the heart of winter is a temptation worth exploring if you have your eye set on a winter adventure.
Spring
Spring is filled with life. It’s a time of arrivals, when great rivers of birds arrive by the day. From ice to the first bloom, spring is full of life and birds who travel epic distances to arrive here in Lofoten, one of the world’s most remote and bird rich arctic island chains!

Arctic Dreams Retreats
Dreaming of experiencing Lofoten and making friends in one of the most magical places in the world!?
We are Rachel Pohl (artist) and Charles Post (ecologist)! We fell in love with the Lofoten Islands in the Arctic of Norway when we visited in 2019 for our honeymoon. Three years later, we sold our slice of paradise in Montana and moved to Lofoten to chase an arctic dream.
We are beyond excited to host TWO RETREATS in 2025, and share the magic of our home island with a small group of you at the beginning of June and October, 2025. This trip is for a small group with 9 spots in total for each retreat. You will find inspiration, connect with community, spend time in nature, learn, and grow alongside your new friends during an unforgettable week!
